In one of the first randomized controlled trials (RCT) on the subject, researchers found that health coaching is associated with significant and sustained improvements in patient health outcomes [Research Paper].

Researchers at UCSF enrolled patients from two primary care safety net clinics who had a diagnosis of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). Patients assigned to the treatment group received 12 months of health coaching from trained  medical assistants at their usual primary care clinics, while the control group received usual care. Health coaches were instructed to contact their patients at least once per month and to have an in-person visit at least once every 3 months.

By offering personalized guidance and trusted advice, the study found that health coaches can significantly improve patient health outcomes in primary care settings. Compared to patients in the control group, those in the health coaching group were 12% more successful at completing at least one health goal. Most notably, patients in the health coaching group were 2.5x more likely than controls to achieve their HbA1c goal for diabetes control. Those numbers are impressive, especially because the study's health coaches had no college education, received limited training, and were working with a disenfranchised low-income population.
